When consulting with leaders one of the questions I often ask is, “What do you do to build trust within your team?” Unfortunately the answer I often get, “I try to be the best leader that I can be,” falls short of the key ingredients necessary to build team trust. Enlightened leaders know they need to coach team members to become leaders themselves both within and outside of their team.

Team trust does not just happen. Trust, just like other team building blocks, needs to be defined, evaluated and addressed head-on by both the leader and team members over time, solidified by the leader and sustained by all. There is no doubt in my mind that employees want to trust their leader and their team members, but sometimes they question skills, capabilities, character, motives, and even shared results along the way.
