Motivating Your Gen Xers
A mixed workforce that includes Gen Xers as well as Millennial employees means creating a workplace that works for both groups. Thankfully, the type of workplace that motivates both generations will appeal to ALL generations. It’s about building a climate of mutual trust, risk taking, and high expectations.
Here are some strategies to try:
-
Provide fulfilling work and challenging assignments – no matter who your employees are, make sure they understand the meaning of the work at hand and the importance of their efforts. Make them feel like they count!
-
Build individual relationships – To create a true team, you need to teach your employees to appreciate one another for their individual strengths and weaknesses.
-
Recognize individual accomplishments – A fundamental difference between Millennials and Gen Xers is their degree of patience with teamwork. While Millennials prefer working in a group, many Gen Xers approach it with skepticism and trepidation. Therefore, it’s important to recognize the individual accomplishments of your employees, whether in a team or working alone.
-
Provide plenty of feedback – Millennials actually crave it, and Gen Xers have learned to be comfortable with it. Provide regular, constructive feedback and watch your employees soar.
Do you provide challenging work everyday to your workforce? How frequently do you provide feedback to your employees?
