What Happened to Gen X?
Remember a few years back, there was another group of offspring from Baby Boomers. They made smaller waves in the workplace, but they were still a big topic of conversation for many businesspeople.
That’s right … Generation X. These are children who were born between 1965 and 1979. In many ways, they have become the forgotten generation because of the recent attention surrounding the Millennials.
To begin with, they are a much smaller group than either Boomers or Millennials. What makes them distinct is that they grew up in a different era – with a different set of realities – and thus have different expectations from other generations.
Generation X is truly a sandwich generation – one that has grown up in the much larger shadows of both Baby Boomers and Millennials. And they are finally coming into their own, as members are reaching their early 30s to mid-40s, and finding their places in the ranks of middle management or being groomed for higher ranks.
And why are they important? Well, even though they are involved in the workplace in smaller numbers, they are still poised to take the reins of leadership when Baby Boomers retire in the coming years.
How distinctive are your Gen X workers compared to other workers in the Baby Boomer or Millennial groups?
